So, I mentioned sharing "disco fever" in my last 2 posts and many of you have probably been wondering what the heck I was talking about. Well, 2 weeks ago, a close friend of ours celebrated the big four-oh! That's right people, some of my friends are turning 40 right about now--and I'm not too far behind. To celebrate this momentous birthday in style, my friend Tricia decided to throw a disco bash for her husband Bill (sporting the Saturday Night Fever Travolta duds), and I was lucky enough to have her ask me to help with some of the party planning. The night had all of the 70's frills that any disco needs to be "all that and a pot of fondue." Nothing sparing, the bash had a disco ball, colored spot lights, a tye-dyed birthday cake, cheese fondue, sodas (in glass bottles, of course), a 4 hour play-list of disco hits from well-knowns like Abba and the BeeGees to one-hit wonders like
Hot Chocolate and Lipps, Inc. Any guesses on some of the songs by these 4 bands that were on the party play list?
Bell-bottoms, afros, acrylic jewelry, and vintage 70's clothing made from fabrics like polyester and silver lame' made the party visually fun while the music inspired even the most reserved of party guests to "shake their groove thang."
Check out this super-fly birthday cake. Tricia and I certainly had a lot more fun making the cake than we did trying to move it down to the gym to stay cool until party-time. The dang thing was too big to fit into the refrigerator--imagine that!
Everything about this party was so much fun. I think I spent nearly 8 hours just looking for and helping friends to find costumes for the night. We foraged through thrift stores , googled 70's disco attire online, watched Abba videos on YouTube, and had a total blast at a local vintage clothing dig called Talk of the Town. Most of our costumes were authentic 70's items that we rented or purchased from this super chic store. I found the coolest floor length button-up silver lame' disco dress that I reworked into this long disco jacket by cutting off some length, pulling in the side seams, and adding darts in the front and back. By the time the party began, I think I'd altered 4 of our costumes. Everyone looked amazing--I mean, don't these clothes just make you wanna dance?
I can't even remember how many times during the party that I told Bill
"thanks for turning 40," and I totally meant it.
Fun times like these
make friendships stronger, and I am so grateful for my friends and the
memories we are creating together. We all had such a good time, an
annual costume-themed dance party might be added to the calendar. I
can't say enough about the disco...I guess I'll just let the pictures
do the talking (or singing and dancing) from here. To see another

Dance on!
